New research again verifies the importance of anti-fatigue matting. The premise behind these mats is very simple: they are designed to make the body sway imperceptibly, thus encouraging regular minor movements of the calf and leg muscles. The direct effect of this is to increase blood flow, increasing circulation and reducing fatigue.
Research has shown that up to a third of European workers spend more than four hours per day on their feet. The greatest portion of these workers is in the manufacturing or service industries (including retail, security and hospitality workers). Tired feet, aching legs and lower back pain are typical results of long hours standing at work. The effect of this fatigue can include lower productivity, increased risk of workplace accidents and several long-term health implications. Thankfully, reducing an employee’s exposure to the above hazards is relatively simple through effective task organisation combined with ergonomic workplace design - often to include the use of anti-fatigue mats.
The ideal workplace would allow employees the choice of standing or sitting in a correctly adjusted ergonomically designed chair, with adequate well-timed rest periods. However, in reality some jobs require unavoidable long periods of static standing; e.g. security guards, machine operators, cashiers and packers. Standing for long periods of time can cause employee posture to become increasingly worse. Typically workers will begin to slouch and shift their weight from one foot to another trying to alleviate strain. Slouching causes the worker to become less active and can result in poor circulation and swollen feet and legs. Poor workplace design can result in restricted movement of the employee, meaning less opportunity to refresh tired muscles.
The flooring has a large impact on workplace health, especially on feet which is why we provide quality rubber mats in Ireland. Hard unyielding concrete or metal floors are the least comfortable to work on, transmitting maximum impact back onto the joints of the worker. Potential health problems of prolonged standing include joint compression, poor circulation, postural muscle fatigue, varicose veins, lower back pain and even more serious conditions including plantar fasciitis and lower limb musculoskeletal disorders.
