10 Things To Do In A Traffic Jam

Categories: News

We’ve all been there.  Being stuck in a traffic jam can sometimes feel like the worst thing in the world, that your day is just starting to go downhill.  However, there are many things you can do to keep yourself occupied. Here are some of the best things you can do the next time find yourself in a lengthy traffic jam.

  1. Read a book

Do you ever say to yourself “I don’t have time to read that book I’ve wanted to read for ages”?  Well why not put that book into the glove box in your car.  Next time you find yourself stuck in a traffic jam you can take the book out and get through a few pages, maybe even a few chapters in a bad traffic jam.  Just be sure to put the book down when it’s time to move again! Or get with the times and use an audio book.

  1. Strike up a conversation with the person in the car next to you

This may seem a bit far, but you’d be surprised how much you could get along with a complete stranger.  Why not roll down the window and try to start a conversation with the person in the car next to you – you may have more in common than you think.  If they give you a dirty look it may be best to roll the window back up again and try one of the other tips.

  1. Turn up your radio and sing along to your favourite song

What’s driving a car without some music? Music in itself is a great way to pass some time and take the edge off during an annoying and tiring traffic jam. Whether you listen to CDs or connect to your Spotify account you can turn up the volume a notch and sing along to your favourite tunes.  Don’t mind the nearby drivers staring at you, they’re just jealous of your talent!

  1. Eat or drink something

Another great way to pass the time is to keep a snack handy in your car.  For most of us eating and drinking our favourite snacks and beverages is a great way to keep calm and relax.  Why not have a flask of tea or even a sandwich ready to go in case you hit a bad traffic jam.  Just be sure to put the food or drink down when you have to move again – you know what happens when you go over a speed bump or speed cushion too fast with a cup of tea in hand!

  1. Play some car games

Do you remember being a child and playing those car games to pass time, Eye Spy etc? Why not relive your childhood and play some next time your caught in a traffic jam.  Keep in mind this may work best if you have passengers in your car. Or if all else fails you can try tip No. 2 again and try to play with a nearby driver.

  1. Clean your car

We all do it.  Sometimes it’s just easier to throw things into our car and not even think about cleaning it.  But now that you have some free time why not give it a small clean, even keep a mini vacuum cleaner handy to get rid of crumbs from having already tried tip No. 4.

  1. Plan your dinner for that night

OK, it’s another food related tip but we can’t get by without food! Why not be productive and plan out your meal for that night.  You could use your smartphone to look up recipes based on what you might have in your cupboard.  Or maybe you prefer a take away – entirely up to you!

  1. Learn a new language

Did you know that Speed Bumps in Spanish is “reductores de velocidad” and convex mirror in Italian is “specchio convesso”?  Having time to kill in a traffic jam means you could start to learn a new language and really open up your skills.  Like the music tip you could put some language programmes on CD and play them out loud – don’t be afraid to shout out the new words and phrases you’ve learned.

  1. Exercise

Exercise is a great way to relieve stress, and we know how stressful traffic jams can make us. Try some breathing exercises or some stretches to loosen yourself up.  Be sure not to go too crazy with stretching, you are in a car after all - we're not saying have a full on pilates session!

  1. Phone a friend or family member

It’s always nice to call a friend or loved one to see how their day is going. Or we could call them to vent our frustrations and let them know how much we hate traffic jams, the choice is yours! Or maybe you could use the time to tell them all the great things you did while stuck in the traffic jam.

Or if you have no one else to call why not call us here at Pittman Traffic and Safety Equipment – we supply a range of speed bumps, convex mirrors, bollards and rubber wheel stops that may perfect for your business premises, school, warehouse or home.  Call us on 01 531 2777 – we’d love to hear from you.
