PITTMAN™ specialise in supplying modular rubber speed bumps, the first choice for traffic calming measures in Ireland. As well as modular speed bumps we also offer speed humps, temporary speed bumps, speed cushions and speed tables.
How do speed bumps and speed humps differ?
Speed bumps are also termed speed ramps and sleeping policemen, and they generally come in depths of 300 and 500 mm (front to back) – PITTMANs 50 mm Premium is a good example. We also stock deeper speed bumps – our Safety Rider Speed Hump measures 900 mm front to back. These deeper speed humps provide less deflection making them easier to drive over, therefore they tend to enable a higher speed rating. Speed bumps are often used where the perceived risk to pedestrians is greater.
When is a modular rubber traffic calming system necessary?
Rubber speed bumps offer distinct advantages over tarmac or concrete manufactured ramps. They feature a precise moulding which makes the height uniform across the width of the bump, so that speed can be completely regulated. The deflection achieved by a 50 mm speed bump and an irregularly formed 30 mm concrete bump is also quite different. Rubber bumps tend to be preferable because of their longevity and the fact they will not chip, rot or crack over time, while the modular sections can easily be replaced should they become damaged or worn. In contrast repairing a tarmac speed bump can be time-consuming and problematic. Rubber speed bumps are easy to install since they’re supplied in modular, bolt-down sections for fast, safe and un-disruptive fitting, unlike the inconvenience that results from fitting tarmac or concrete speed ramps.
