retracting bollards

What are retractable bollards?

Retractable bollards are bollards that can be sunk or collapsed into the ground in order to allow and deter entry.

What are Retractable Bollards used for?

Retractable bollards are used to deter vehicle entry into an area or deter theft of a vehicle while in place. While retractable bollards require a bit more labour when it comes to installation, they more than make up for it in long-term benefits. Because the retractable bollards are installed under the ground in concrete, they provide excellent durability over time. They would be very difficult to remove from their place, providing excellent access control where needed.

The Anti Ram-Raid Retractable Security Post is the most popular option among the retractable bollards. Made from tough zinc-plated steel this heavy-duty retractable bollard can be quickly and easily installed into concrete and can be easily lowered or raised using the handle at the top of the bollard.

Each anti-ram retractable bollard comes with a 90mm discus padlock that lets you quickly lock the bollard in place while in use. Moreover, each bollard comes with black and yellow chevrons that will alert nearby motorists or pedestrians to its presence while it's upright. Available from stock, the anti-ram-raid retractable bollard can be dispatched direct to you in 1-2 days and can provide you with years of anti-theft benefits.

Another option for retractable bollards is the BudgetBollard Heavy Duty Retractable Security Post. A sister product of the above-mentioned item, the heavy-duty retractable bollard is again made with tough zinc-plated steel that is perfect for preventing corrosion while in use outdoors.

While it is smaller and thinner than the anti ram bollard, the heavy duty post still makes a very effective means of deterring theft and is ideal for use at home or in private business premises. These retractable posts are also ideal for using in car park spaces or warehouse doors, preventing unwanted vehicles from entering a particular area.

Retractable Bollards FAQ

There are three main types of retractable bollards available.

  • Manual - manual retractable bollards must be raised and lowered by hand. They are ideal when only one or two bollards are in use beside each other. Manual rectracting bollards are also highly suited anti-ram purposes at warehouse doors and shopfronts where they can prevent theft and reduce risk from vehicle ramming.

  • Semi-automatic - semi-automatic bollards provide a blend between automatic and manual use. They are gas-assisted and will lower and raise when unlocked via a key. These bollards are suitable for private premises where some degree of manual use may want to be kept for security purposes.

  • Automatic - fully automatic bollards provide the best convenience and reliability for access control in public spaces. These bollards operate via a hydraulic mechanism and will both raise and lower via the use of a keyfob or remote. Our automatic bollards can be set to work via license plate recognition, remote control or even specific times of the day or week.
  • High security against vehicle ramming - retractable posts have to be installed deep into the ground so that they can retract. This provides a solid foundation that has excellent resistance against vehicle ramming.

  • Easy to use - collapsing bollards simply raise and lower when needed. While manual bollards will require lifting into place, automatic bollards can raise or lower on their own or by remote control.

  • Reduced trip hazard - retractable posts will sink fully into the ground and reduce the trip hazard on the surface. With most bollards, the top cap will become flush with the surface on retracting, unlike removable or fold-down options that leave trip hazards.

Retractable bollards are installed deep into the ground, and the sub-surface housing allows the main post to retract into it. Instead of leaving a post or lid on the ground, the bollards will become flush with the surface and reduce trip hazards.

Manual and semi-automatic bollards will generally require nothing else after installation is complete. Automatic bollards, however, will have to be wired and programmed on installation. These bollards can be accessed by control panels that are usually located near the access point.

Automatic retracting bollards can be operated via bluetooth app, license plate recognition, remote control or time and date programming.

PAS68 rating refers an impact resistance test that determines the strength of bollards or barriers and their suitability for hostile vehicle mitigation (HMV).

Retractable bollards are often used for anti-ram purposes and some are suitable for protection against terrorism on public streets and government buildings.

Depending on the type of bollard, it may be able to withstand certain degrees of force. This will depend on the -

  • Speed of the impacting vehicle
  • Size and thickness of the bollard
  • Angle at which it is being struck
  • General wear and tear already affecting the bollard

Most rising bollards are not made to withstand vehicle impacts. However, some versions may stop impacting vehicles at lower speeds. When purchasing rising bollards check for ratings, including PAS68 or any mention of hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) in the specifications.

Manual retracting bollards can be lowered or raised as quick as you can manage.

Our automatic retracting bollards can raise or lower in approxiamtely 7 - 8 seconds.
