Increasing Bike Storage Capacity at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham

The Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin, operated by the Office of Public Works (OPW), stands as a testament to Ireland's rich history and architectural heritage. Built in 1680 by royal command, the RHK is the oldest classical building in Ireland. It has served various purposes over its long history, including housing army pensioners, serving as Garda Headquarters, and now hosting the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).

Set within 48 acres of beautifully preserved grounds, the RHK balances its historical significance with modern functionality. Recognising the need for improved cycle storage, the OPW partnered with us for a sensitive yet effective solution that respected the site's unique limitations. This case study explores how our expertise delivered a seamless installation, enhancing the RHK’s facilities while preserving its iconic charm.

Project Overview

The OPW, responsible for the maintenance and upgrades of Ireland's heritage buildings, approached us to enhance the cycle storage capacity at the historic site of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The goal was to increase the existing capacity of 20 spaces to a total of 60, while adhering to the unique construction limitations of the location.

Challenges

The site’s historical significance posed restrictions on construction methods, requiring careful planning to ensure compliance. Additionally, the OPW sought a cost-effective solution that could be implemented swiftly without compromising on quality.

Additionally, a custom concrete pad was installed to provide a stable base for one of the racks. We managed the entire process, from the initial site inspection to overseeing the team during the two-day installation. A final quality check ensured the project’s success.

Implementation Process

  • Pre-installation site inspection conducted by Pittman.
  • Two-day installation completed efficiently without any
    issues.
  • Post-installation quality check to verify work was completed
    to the highest standards.
