Irish Road Safety Week: Creating Safer Roads & Public Spaces

Irish Road Safety Week takes place from Monday 5 October to Sunday 11 October 2026. Led by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), the week brings road safety into focus for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and communities across Ireland.

At Pittman, safety is at the heart of what we do. Our focus is on helping create safer roads, workplaces and public spaces, which is why we’re supporting Irish Road Safety Week and helping to raise awareness around road safety.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. The choices we make when driving, walking or cycling matter, but the way our roads, workplaces, car parks and public spaces are designed and managed can also contribute to safer environments.

By making safer choices today, we can help create safer roads for tomorrow.

Irish Road Safety Week 2026

Irish Road Safety Week is a national initiative focused on helping to save lives and prevent serious injuries on Irish roads.

Throughout the week, the RSA and other road safety organisations will support initiatives designed to raise awareness and encourage safer behaviour among road users.

Irish Tyre Industry Association members across Ireland are inviting motorists to visit participating registered dealers for a free tyre pressure check and tread depth inspection.

Motorists can visit www.itia.ie to find their nearest ITIA registered dealer and access further information about tyre safety.

Other activities throughout Irish Road Safety Week include the RSA Annual International Road Safety Conference on Thursday 8 October and National Child Safety Day on Friday 9 October.

Encourage Safer Vehicle Speeds

Managing vehicle speeds is particularly important in locations where vehicles and pedestrians regularly interact.

Car parks, workplaces, schools, residential developments and public spaces can all benefit from measures that encourage drivers to slow down and approach busy areas with greater care.

Traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and speed cushions can help encourage lower vehicle speeds and provide drivers with a clear physical reminder to slow down. The Pittman™ 50mm Speed Bump Kit is one solution for introducing traffic calming in areas where vehicle speeds need to be managed.

When combined with appropriate signage, road markings and sensible site design, traffic calming can form part of a wider approach to managing vehicle movements safely.

Guide Traffic and Protect Pedestrians

Clear and predictable routes can make busy environments easier for drivers and pedestrians to navigate.

Measures such as the Flexi Bollard and JSP Navigator™ Traffic Cone 750mm can help identify routes, highlight restricted areas and guide vehicles through workplaces, car parks and public spaces.

Where people and vehicles regularly share the same environment, creating clear pedestrian areas is also important.

Pedestrian barriers and bollards can be used to define walking routes, restrict vehicle access and create clearer separation between pedestrians and moving traffic.

These measures are most effective when they form part of a wider approach that considers signage, visibility, road markings and the way people and vehicles naturally move through a space.

Improve Car Park Safety

Car parks can present particular challenges because vehicles and pedestrians are often moving within the same relatively confined area.

Drivers may be parking, reversing and manoeuvring while pedestrians travel between vehicles, buildings and surrounding footpaths.

Simple measures can help make these movements more predictable. Wheel stops, for example, can help position vehicles within designated parking spaces and maintain appropriate distances from footpaths, buildings and other infrastructure.

Stainless steel bollards can help control vehicle access to certain areas, while clearly defined pedestrian routes and suitable traffic calming measures can further support safer movement through a car park.

Good car park safety ultimately comes down to creating an environment where drivers and pedestrians can clearly understand where they should be and how they should move through the space.

Making Places Safer

Irish Road Safety Week is an important reminder that safer roads and public spaces depend on all of us.

Whether we are driving, cycling or walking, the decisions we make can help protect ourselves and the people around us.

For organisations responsible for roads, workplaces, schools, car parks and public spaces, it is also an opportunity to consider whether the environments they manage can be made safer, clearer and better organised.

At Pittman, Making Places Safer is at the heart of what we do. We work with organisations across Ireland to provide traffic calming, traffic management, pedestrian safety and car park solutions designed to support safer, better managed environments.
